Real Madrid have suffered a major setback in the Madrid derby, losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano.
Los Blancos struggled to impose themselves on the game, with Atletico controlling much of the first half and limiting Real Madrid’s attacking threat.
Jose Mourinho made two changes from the side that beat Elche earlier in the week, handing starts to Denzel Dumfries and Jude Bellingham in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Yan Diomande.
However, the changes failed to spark a convincing performance from Madrid, who had already been forced to recover from a two-goal collapse against Elche before securing a late win.
How Tough The Game Was For Real Madrid
Atletico Madrid enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes, although neither side managed to create enough clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock.
The game changed dramatically just seven minutes after half-time.
Dean Huijsen conceded a penalty after bringing down Giuliano Simeone inside the Real Madrid box. The defender was then shown a red card after the referee ruled that he had not made a genuine attempt to play the ball.
Real Madrid were suddenly down to 10 men, leaving Mourinho’s side with a huge uphill battle as Atletico Madrid looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
